The Personnel Department of the City of Shreveport, Louisiana provides comprehensive human resource management services for the bulk of
City employment. Functions include recruitment and selection processes; classification and pay
systems; policy development and management; employee training and development programs; equal employment opportunity and affirmative action programming; and humanistic services such as
Employee Assistance Programs (EAP).

EMPLOYMENT
PROCESS AT THE CITY OF SHREVEPORT
Below is an introduction to the employment process by the City of Shreveport
Personnel Department. It includes information on filing
applications, testing, and complaint procedures.
It is hoped that with this information the applicant will better
understand the "system" and will be better prepared to
deal with the employment process itself.

The City of Shreveport employs over 2,500 people in many different job classifications. All jobs are described and can be found In the job description books
In the Personnel Department. Each job description is divided into the following sections.
Work Performed:
describes the general duties and responsibilities of the job.

Minimum Qualifications:
lists the knowledge, skills, abilities, education and experience
requirements at time of hire or promotion.

The Personnel Department takes applications for jobs that are currently being advertised. Job openings are posted in the Personnel Department, on the Fifth floor of the Government Plaza,
505 Travis Street, Shreveport, LA. Job openings also may be advertised in the "Help Wanted" section of the local newspaper.
For a brief description of current job openings, interested persons may call
318-673-5170.
Applications must be received on or before the last date for filing, which is stated on the announcement. All announcements are posted for at least five
days, and you are invited to visit the Personnel Department to view a list of current job openings.
Please read each announcement completely before filling out an application. Pay particular
attention to qualification requirements. Remember, your application describes your qualifications, so make sure it is complete by answering all of the questions.
Remember, too, that related volunteer experience counts and should be treated just like any other type of experience; be sure to put it on your application so you can get credit for it.
All first time applicants must complete an
application and supplement.
The purpose of the application is to establish an
application history with the Personnel Department. This application
only
needs to be completed every two years.
The purpose of the supplement is to apply for a
specific job posting and is required for
each position the
applicant applies for.

Once the application and supplement have been completed, they must be
turned into the Personnel office by 12 noon on Friday of the same week
advertised by one of the following methods.

Personnels office hours are Monday thru Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm.
Applications are accepted between the hours of
8:00 am and 3:00 pm Monday
through Thursday and
8:00 am to 12 noon on Friday

Maybe you do, but does your application clearly show you have the necessary experience and/or training as stated on the job announcement? Applications are reviewed to be sure everyone meets the minimum requirements. Some of the most common reasons for rejection are:
The application does not
show the minimum amount of experience required.

incomplete (something has been left out).

Your application was
received after the deadline for filing.

Currently 25% of classified
jobs involve some kind of test. Any combination of the following
different types of tests are used:
Written: which
measures job-related knowledge.

Oral: where you
would discuss your job history and/or explain how you would
handle job problems.

Performance: where
you demonstrate samples of job-related tasks.

Appraisal of
Qualifications: used to rank applicants on the basis of their
qualifications.
The Personnel Department
posts notices of when a test will be given about a week or more
in advance.
The City of
Shreveport will provide reasonable
accommodation to handicapped applicants, if requested. Please
notify the Personnel Department at least two days prior to the
need.

WHEN WILL
I GET MY RESULTS?
Generally, you should
receive a notification of results 2 - 3 weeks after the testing
date. Your notice of results will tell you whether you passed or
failed the test. If you passed, it will list your final grade.
Open examination lists
usually last for a minimum of one year. How long a list is used
depends on the number of people on the list and how many
vacancies are filled.
You will be contacted by the hiring authority
ONLY
if selected for an interview.

I APPLIED
FOR A JOB - WHY HAVEN'T I BEEN CONTACTED?
If you cannot be located,
you will miss the interview and may not be considered for the
current position. If there are no vacancies, or you did not score
in the top three scores, you may not be contacted at all.

HOW LONG DOES MY APPLICATION STAY ACTIVE?
Your primary employment application will
remain active for two years. If you have not gained employment with the City
of Shreveport within the two year period, your application becomes inactive
and is removed from our files.
Supplements are forwarded to the hiring authority
and are not kept in Personnel. Therefore, applicants will need to complete a
new supplement for all future positions applied for.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS USED FOR SELECTION OF APPLICANTS?
- Submit application and supplement by 12 noon on
Friday of week advertised by mail, fax, email or delivery.
- Application is scored with supervisor and analyst the
following week.
- Top 3 scores are selected for interview and
forwarded to appropriate departments.
- Applicants are contacted by appropriate department for
interviews.
- If you are selected, your offer of employment will be
contingent upon three things:
- Criminal Records background check
- Drug screen
- Physical

Any complaint alleging
unfairness or prejudice in an examination must be made in writing
to the Personnel Director, City of Shreveport, P. O. Box 31109,
Shreveport, LA 71130, within three business days
following the examination.
