January 29, 2010 - Chief Crawford Applauds Engine Company 7 for a Valiant Rescue in the Highland Community

Exemplary Effort by Shreveport Fire Fighters

Fire Chief Brian A. Crawford commends Captain C. Morgan, Engineer S. Fife and Firefighter B. Smotherman after receiving a comprehensive report of last nights fire on Creswell Avenue. “Engine 7 did an outstanding job in reaching the trapped victim as rapidly and safely as possible under the given circumstances. Our firefighters remained focused and did not deter from their mission to save Mr. Guy Bond’s life,” stated Chief Crawford. “Our guys exemplified attributes of a good firefighter, which include; courage, persistence and training. Shreveport fighters continue to prove their unyielding concern and dedication to serving the citizens of Shreveport.”

On Wednesday, January 27 at 10:20 p.m., Engine Company 7 encountered a very stressful moment-arriving on scene of a huge split-level home with flames billowing from the windows and an occupant trapped inside. Captain C. Morgan, Engineer S. Fife and Firefighter B. Smotherman trusted their training and reacted swiftly to help a citizen in distress.

Anxious neighbors surrounded Captain Morgan and crew and informed them that a 65 year old male was trapped in the back of the home. Firefighters donned their Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), stretched a hose line for protection from flames while attempting to rescue the patient, and forced entry through the back door of the home. After gaining entry through a small hole cut into the back door, Firefighter Smotherman located the victim approximately 10 feet from the back door. Captain Morgan and Firefighter Smotherman removed the patient to a safe atmosphere where paramedics performed artificial respirations until the patient was transported to LSUHSC where he is currently listed in critical condition.
