FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Shreveport Police officer shoots gunman

A man who turned his gun on police after firing shots in a residential neighborhood was shot by an officer this morning.

Just minutes after midnight on January 1, 2010, Shreveport Police officers working near Denton St. in Shreveport’s Mooretown neighborhood heard several shots being fired. As they responded to investigate, the officers observed a male suspect firing a handgun near the dead-end of the 3800 block of Denton St. The officers approached the suspect, identified themselves as police officers and ordered him to drop the weapon, at which time he turned and pointed the gun at police. An officer fired two shots, striking the suspect twice, once in the leg and once in the torso. The suspect, whose name is not being released at this time, was transported to LSUHSC by the Shreveport Fire Department with what have been described as serious injuries. None of the officers were injured.

The officer who fired at the suspect has been placed on routine administrative leave by Police Chief Henry Whitehorn. Detectives have seized the handgun the suspect was firing and are working at this time to determine what charges he will face.
