Detectives investigate latest homicide

Shreveport Police detectives are working a shooting that claimed the life of a local woman.

At approximately 4:24 p.m. on January 17, 2010, Shreveport Police patrol officers responded to a shots fired call in the 3900 block of Miles St. Upon arrival, officers were flagged down by a male suspect, later identified as 24 year old Jermaine Bates, who reported that he had shot his girlfriend. Officers subsequently located the body of 24 year old Shanathan Prude inside a home there on Miles St. Prude was suffering from at least one gunshot wound to the upper torso and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Patrol officers took Bates into custody.

Detectives and crime scene investigators were dispatched to the scene and immediately began their investigation. Detectives interviewed Bates and based on this interview believe that Bates and Prude, who were romantically involved, were engaged in some type of altercation over a firearm during which the gun went off, striking Prude. Investigators stress this investigation is in the very early stages and still ongoing.

Jermaine Bates, of the 3900 block of Miles St. in Shreveport, has been booked into the Shreveport City Jail on two counts of convicted felon in possession of a firearm. Detectives have conferred with the Caddo Parish District Attorney’s Office and advise other charges may follow.

Due to technical difficulties with the camera system at the Shreveport City Jail, Jermaine Bates’ mug shot is not immediately available.
