"A Grateful City Remembers"

The Shreveport Police and Firefighters Memorial was built in 1999 in honor of the many men and women who courageously gave their lives in the line of duty.  At the time of its construction, the memorial listed the names of 23 city police officers and three firefighters who died in duty-related incidents since 1894.  The Memorial is a permanent reminder of their ultimate contribution to public safety and their sincere desire to serve the citizens of Shreveport.

The Police and Firefighters Memorial is located in Barnwell Gardens south of the R.S. Barnwell Memorial Garden and Art Center, across from the Civic Theatre on Clyde Fant Parkway.

A circular brick-paved patio in the landscaped garden features a dramatic monument consisting of two ten-foot granite columns set on a granite base.  The columns represent the Shreveport Police and Fire Departments.  Encircling the patio are granite markers bearing the names of all Shreveport police officers and firefighters who have lost their lives in duty-related incidents.

You can visit the Shreveport Police and Firefighters Memorial by exiting Interstate 20 east or westbound at the Spring Street exit.  Turn right at the second traffic light onto Crockett Street, go two more blocks and turn left on Clyde Fant Parkway.   Parking is available across from the R.S. Barnwell Garden and Art Center.

Officer Wilson was trying to arrest Joe Ruben after the suspect stabbed his mother-in-law in the face.  Suspect shot officer in front of suspect's house at 905 Sprague Street.  Buried at Oakland Cemetery	Fireman Roach was fatally injured while responding to a fire alarm.  He was thrown from the chemical truck he was riding in when it hit a hole in the road.  Buried at Greenwood Cemetery.	Officer Irvine was killed by a drunken suspect while trying to arrest him outside of Kelley's Saloon.  Buried at Greenwood Cemetery.
Patrolman Constantine Andreola Injured: January 14, 1908     Died: February 13, 1908	Fireman Crayton Hilburn Died: February 6, 1915	Patrolman George H. Phillips Died: October 19, 1918
Officer Andreola died from injuries sustained in an accident between a patrol wagon and a street car at Crockett and Texas.  Buried at Oakland Cemetery.	Fireman Hillborn was at the scene of a fire when he came into contact with a heavily charged wire and was electrocuted.	Officer Phillips was shot and killed during an argument between two men at the T & P Store at Caddo and Market.  Buried at Greenwood Cemetery.

Detective Hall was shot and killed by an unknown assailant while sitting in his automobile at Stoner and Creswell.  His homicide remains unsolved.   Buried at Forest Park on St. Vincent Avenue.	Officer Williams was killed in a gambling raid in the Bottoms, 1425 Hotchkiss, now Milam Street.  Buried at Forest Park on St. Vincent Avenue. Detective Grant was shot and wounded by a kidnapping and murder suspect at Peabody and Butler Streets.  He died from his injuries about 5 months later.  Buried at Jewella Cemetery on Greenwood Road.	Officer Fuller was injured in the 2100 block of Claiborne Avenue in a motorcycle accident while enroute to investigate a hit-and-run accident.  He hit a pot hole at the railroad crossing causing his motorcycle to land on top of him and drag him several yards before stopping.  He died the next morning at Tri-State Hospital, now known as Willis-Knighton.  Buried at Forest Park on St. Vincent Ave.	Officer Jacobs was working a dance at 1214 Western Avenue.  He asked a suspect to leave and the suspect refused.  Suspect got officer's pistol and shot him with it.  Officer Jacobs died at Charity Hospital on Texas Street.  The suspect was electrocuted at the Caddo Parish Court House about a year later.  Buried at Summer Grove Cemetery.

Officer Ogle was shot and killed at 436 East Topeka while trying to arrest a suspect involved in a shooting.  The suspect was shot and killed by the officer and his partner.  Buried at Centuries Cemetery.	Police Chief Huckabay went to Bossier Parish to assist in the arrest of a suspect wanted for killing a Bossier Parish Deputy.  Chief Huckabay was shot as he entered a farm house where the fugitive was located.  Buried at Forest Park on St. Vincent Avenue.	Officer Herriage stopped to question a suspect at the foot of 4th Street near the L&A Railroad yard when the suspect pulled a small-caliber pistol and shot him.  Buried at Forest Park on St. Vincent Avenue.

Lieutenant Blackmon was stepping out of his patrol unit to assist on a call at 3730 Fairfield when a suspect in a second floor apartment window shot the officer with a shotgun.  Suspect was later killed by other officers.  Buried at Centuries Cemetery.	Officer Tompkins was transporting a prisoner in the 7300 block of Mansfield Road when the prisoner shot him from the back seat.  Buried at Forest Park Cemetery.	Officer Burney was killed in a traffic accident while rendering aid during the Bossier City tornado.

Training Officer Johnson was answering a call at Dixie Cold Storage for an anhydrous ammonia leak in the building.  While inside, a spark caused an explosion and he was unable to get out of the building.  He died three days later.	Officer Davidson was shot and killed while looking for a burglary suspect in the Kon Tiki Restaurant at 5815 Youree Drive.  Buried at Centuries Cemetery.	Corporal Lupton was struck by a car during a traffic stop on I-20 westbound west of Broadway.  The suspect was arrested and later hung himself while in parish jail.  Buried at Rose-Neath Cemetery.

Corporal Wells was killed at Youree Drive and Crofton by an elderly man driving on the wrong side of the road.  Buried at Rose-Neath Cemetery.	Officer Dean was fatally wounded at the Pines Apartments, 8052 Line Avenue, while attempting to serve a search warrant.  Buried at Hillcrest Cemetery.	Corporal Williams was fatally wounded at 1725 Magnolia Avenue while attempting to serve a search warrant for narcotics at a duplex apartment.  Buried at Centuries Cemetery.

Corporal/Detective James Joseph Silva Homicide Unit Died: April 10, 1994	Officer Christopher Charles Hays  Narcotics Bureau  Died: February 5, 1995	Captain Frankie Paul Nelson SFD Died: May 10, 2009
Corporal Silva was killed when an eastbound vehicle turned left in front of his westbound vehicle at Greenwood Road and Curtis Lane.  Silva was investigating a shooting at the time.	On January 18, 1995, Officer Hays received a rope burn while participating with the Special Response Team in a repelling exercise at the Regional Police Academy.   As a result of this injury, Officer Hays developed a blood clot in his leg.   The clot dislodged while responding on foot to a felony call, causing his death.	On May 9, 2009, Captain Nelson worked a 24-hour work shift and engaged or participated in fire suppression, emergency medical services, rescue, or emergency response activity. On May 10, less than 24 hours later, he died of an apparent heart attack. His death is considered in the line of duty. He is buried at Centuries Memorial on Mansfield Road.

Battalion Chief Tommy Lee Adams SFD Died: December 12, 2009
After falling from a Fire Department ladder truck following the Crew of Gemini Mardi Gras parade on February 21 of this year, Chief Adams passed away from complications due to injuries sustained.  Chief Adams death will be classified as a line-of-duty death and he will be buried with full firefighter honors at Forest Park West.
